Speed Up Adobe Acrobat Reader

This trick makes Adobe Reader(for .pdf files) load almost as fast as notepad(Honest!)

It is one of my all-time favourite tricks!

It took me far too many years to finally get sick of how slow Adobe Acrobat loads PDF files. It was taking between 10 and 30 seconds to load a single file. How could this be? Well, I found a solution and I highly recommend it to everyone, everywhere - it’s that good.

Every time you run Adobe Acrobat up to 20 plugins are loaded unnecessarily - most users do not need even a fraction of them!

To disable unneeded plugins and make them optional instead, follow these instructions:

  1. Install the latest version of Adobe Acrobat - you can get it here
  2. Browse to the plugins folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\plug_ins
  3. Create a new folder named Optional
  4. Move all files from the plug_ins folder to Optional, except EWH32.api, print*.api, and Search*.api
That’s it! Load any PDF in Adobe Acrobat to see the difference!

You might also want to use the FoxIt pdf reader, which is faster, and more efficient.

Speed Up Torrent Downloads

So do you use torrents do download anything you want? Well, I do too. If you dont know what torrents are, man, you need to grow up. Click here to know more about them.

Anyways, this post is about speeding up torrent downloads. It's written by a friend, with an occasional edit from me. This is probably the best torrent help file ever made available. Hope you like it.

1. Hack the max half-open TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This might hurt your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to as much peers as you want. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it could cripple your torrent downloads.

A nice way to fix this is to download this patch (mirror).

Note: Some people report that their antivir reports the patch to be a Virus, This is not the case. Check out http://www.lvllord.de/ for more details on this

The patch allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more is NOT always better).

Next you need to configure your torrent client to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections

µTorrent: Options > Preferences > Advanced options > net.max_halfopen. Then set it(
net.max_halfopen) to 80.

Bitcomet: Options > Preferences > Connection > max half-open TCP. Set it to 80.

Now you’re ready to go…

A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then. You can check this by going to (in windows xp) Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).

If there are a lot of daily occurences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spyware…

2. Torrent Client Configuration

In order to apply these tips you need to know your maximum up- and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over here (stop all download activity while testing). Also make sure that you applied the tips provided in our previous posts.

Note that there’s a difference between kb/s (kilobits/second) and kB/s (kilobytes/second). To be precise, kB/s = kb/s divided by 8. In this tutorial we use kB/s (like most torrent clients do). This means that you might need to calculate your max speed in kB/s yourself if the speedtest only gives you the results in kb\s (so divide by 8 then).

Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or preference tab of most torrent clients.

1. Maximum upload speed

Probably the most important setting there is. Your connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.

Use the following formula to determine your optimal upload speed…

CODE

80% of your maximum upload speed

so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal upload rate is 32kB/s

But keep seeding!

2. Maximum download speed

Although setting your maximum download speed to unlimited may sound interesting, in reality it will only hurt your connection. If you still want to be able to browse properly, set your maximum download speed to:

CODE

95% of your maximum download speed

so if your maximum download speed is 400 kB/s, the optimal download speed is 380kB/s

3. Maximum connected peers per torrent

Yet another setting that you don’t want to max out. I experimented quite a lot with the max connected peers settings and came to the conclusion that both high and low number hurt the download speed of a torrent. The following setting worked best for me.

CODE

upload speed * 1.3

so if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal amount of connected peers per torrent is

CODE

40 * 1.3 = 52

I didn’t noticed a difference for fast or slow connections here.

4. Maximum upload slots

CODE

1 + (upload speed / 6)

so if your maximum upload speed is 30 kB/s, the optimal number of upload slots is

CODE

1 + (30 / 6) = 6

3. More Tips

Check seeds and peers
A simple tip, but very important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

Change the default port.
By default, bittorrent uses a port 6881-6999. Bittorrent generates a lot traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have your ports forwarded (portforward.com) or UPnP enabled.

Disable Windows Firewall
It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent (free) firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

Turn on Encryption
Encrypting your torrents will prevent throttling ISP’s from limiting your bittorrent traffic. Check out how to enable encryption in Azureus, µtorrent, and Bitcomet, the three most popular torrent clients.

Optimize your internet connection
The TCP optimizer is a freeware utility that optimizes your internet connection. I found it very useful and it helped speeding up my connection for regular internet activity and for downloading torrents. Just download it, and move the slidebar to your maximum download rate (note that it’s in kb/s). Don’t try to set it higher because that will hurt your download speeds!

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

Happy Torrenting!

PS: If you want faster and better connections, you know whom to contact.

Increase your Internet Browsing speed

Here are some tried and tested(by me) tips to increase your internet Browsing Speed.
They are sure to work. See how many you know about, and comment if you know any better ones :). Originally posted by a friend "somewhere", but hell they work, so that's nothing no one can complain about.

To increase ur BB speed do the following steps :
1) check the quality of cabling for any distortion.( ideally ur BSNL telephone will give a clear sound )
2) check the firmware of ur router/modem (from manufacturer wesite) which should be latest
3)Hard reset ur modem/router for 15sec.
4)Try using a static DNS address (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220)
5)Also, there’s nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes. This also affects your Broadband peformance. You can get back this 20% as follows:
Click Start–>Run–>type “gpedit.msc” without the “
This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy–>Computer Configuration–>Administrative Templates–>Network–>QOS Packet Scheduler–>
Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab :
“By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this
setting to override the default.”
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
6) Identify the IRQ used by the NIC/USB modem

Open the System Information tool by running MSINFO32.EXE from the Run command.
Expand System Summary > Hardware Resources > IRQs.
Look for the listing made for your NIC (in my case - a Intel® PRO/100+ Management Adapter). Note the IRQ next to the specified line (in my case - IRQ21)
AFTER THAT!!
Modify the system.ini file

Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.
Expand the system.ini file window.
Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].
Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type IrqX=4096 where X is the designated IRQ number we found in step #1, in my case it’s IRQ21.

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

Click on the File menu, then choose Save.
Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.
Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

7) USE DAP
8) Use opera browser by blocking images and gif animation ! This will save ur Bandwidth by 40%. ( u will be able to surf more in less bandwidth/Mb of usage)

Change your BSNL Dataone Password

So many people who use BSNL DataOne Broadband connection ask me how to check their account usage and change their password. So much phishing and phreaking is going on nowadays, that it is probable, that your BSNL account has been cracked by someone, and they're using it for free(making you pay the bills). So if you havent changed your password yet, DO IT NOW. And dont think "IT CANT HAPPEN TO ME". Coz it can, and it does. So here is the procedure to change your DataOne password, and/or check your BSNL Account usage...

1. Open Internet Explorer(Firefox wont work(Yeah, BSNL Sux) and type in http://10.240.224.195/webLogin.jsp.

2. Enter your username and password. Press

3. Click on Service Records. Select the month, and there you have the Account usage details(with timing and data transfer).

To change the password,

1. Repeat (1) and (2) above.

2. Click on change password, and you can do it from here.

3. Dont forget to logout after you're done.

AGLOCO: Earn money while surfing the web, guaranteed

Say, for how many hours do you surf the web in a month, 30?40? The point is that you obviously do it for more than 5 hours. And you pay for it too...Wouldn't it be nice if someone paid you for surfing the net? Yup, thats true, and thats what AGLOCO(A GLObal COmmunity) is all about.

All you have to do is a simple signup, which takes less than a couple of minutes, and your ready to go.

This is how it works: You signup, and get a simple "viewbar" in your browser like a toolbar(dont you already use a Google/yahoo toolbar? - they dont pay you do they), and let the cash pile up while you surf your account. Even if you just signup, get the toolbar, and forget it, you get paid $10 -$20 a month, for absolutely no work on your part.
But here the best part, if you refer three members, who in turn refer 3 others each, then your earnings multiply wildly, to about $450 a month, possibly more.

Let me say that this is not just another MLM(MultiLevel Marketing) ploy, or another fake pyramid scheme.
In fact, AGLOCO's predecessor (Alladvantage.com) paid out over $120 million to its members (this is what finally convinced me). But the idea was too ahead of it's time, and the internet hadn't spread into every nook and crony of the world.

But now it has, and this is possible. So what are you waiting for, click here and get your free account now.

Even Bill Gates has said that Google will have to watch out for AGLOCO in the future.
Eventually, it has been predicted that almost every user will join up, and so will you.

PS: If you are still least bit skeptical, dont join, you're the one who will regret it later...If all those raw stats didn't work on your brain, god knows what will; just go away.

On the other hand, if you do want to join =), welcome, hope you have a great browsing experience.

*Update: AGLOCO now serves over 3,710,000 search results in Google, 1,000,000 more than two months ago.

Don't miss out! Sign up now, so you can get a head start in the potential earnings.
